The Office of the President strongly criticized the High-ranking Officials Corruption Investigation Office (Public Officials’ Corruption Investigation Office), which is investigating the suspicions of external pressure in the death of Marine Corps Private Cha Mo, for obtaining President Yoon Seok-yeol’s personal cell phone call records.

An official from the Blue House met with reporters at the Blue House in Yongsan on the 14th and said, “If someone intentionally leaked it, it is a serious crime equivalent to leaking official secrets and announcing the facts of a case,” and “Those involved must be held accountable.” He added, “The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials has not even summoned former Minister Lee Jong-seop for questioning yet. They are saying they will look into the president’s phone records.”

The official also said, “The police also concluded that the charges against former Marine Corps 1st Division Commander Lim Seong-geun for abuse of power were not recognized, and Colonel Park Jeong-hoon (former Marine Corps investigation unit chief) also stated at a National Assembly hearing that there was no external pressure,” adding, “The fact that the external pressure that the opposition party has been claiming currently does not exist at all is now being revealed.”

Earlier, the Public Prosecution Service obtained the personal mobile phone call records of key figures in the presidential office, including President Yoon, in mid-month. The scope of the call records disclosed is for two months from July to August of last year, and the call records include the incoming and outgoing phone numbers of the parties involved, the time of text messages, and the region of origin.

An official from the Blue House criticized, “If we have seen the president’s phone records, what else do we need?” and “Now they need to properly report the results of the investigation. I don’t know how long the public will have to tolerate this behavior of not conducting a proper investigation and instead leaking investigative secrets.”

The Public Prosecutor’s Office has not made a special statement on this matter. The Public Prosecutor’s Office plans to expand its investigation to the Office of the President by analyzing the call records of officials in the Office of the President. The Public Prosecutor’s Office has so far investigated the Ministry of National Defense and Marine Corps leadership, including Yoo Jae-eun, the legal affairs officer for the Ministry of National Defense, and Kim Gye-hwan, the commander of the Marine Corps.
