It has been reported that President Yoon Seok-yeol plans to appoint a successor to the Minister of Gender Equality and Family, who has been vacant for seven months. As the government is pushing for the establishment of a Deputy Prime Minister-level Population Strategy Planning Department (Ministry of Population), it is analyzed that the opposition party, including the Democratic Party of Korea, accepted the demand for ‘normalization of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family’ as a condition.
A senior official in the Presidential Office said in a phone call with the Dong-A Ilbo on the 27th, “We are considering the normalization of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family positively from the perspective of cooperation.” A key Democratic Party official said, “Since the ruling party is asking us to cooperate in passing the amendment to the Government Organization Act to establish the Ministry of Population, we have been requesting that in order to do so, we must resolve the distrust of our party that they are trying to create the Ministry of Population instead of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. “I see it as a response to that,” he said.
As it was pointed out that there is no one in charge of responding to current issues related to sexual crimes such as deepfakes, there is also an aspect of resolving the vacuum in work. Prime Minister Han Deok-soo also said in a question to the government at the National Assembly on the 12th, “We are considering appointing a Minister of Gender Equality and Family” in response to the opposition party’s point that “there is no Minister of Gender Equality and Family who should be in charge of deepfake sex crimes.”
Inside and outside the President’s Office, the candidates for the successor to the Minister of Gender Equality and Family include former People’s Power Party lawmaker Jeon Joo-hye, current lawmaker Han Ji-ah, chief spokesperson, and Vice Minister of Gender Equality and Family Shin Young-sook. However, a key passport official said, “Verification has not yet begun.”
The establishment of the Ministry of Population is considered a key task by President Yoon. On the 24th, the Office for Government Policy Coordination announced that it had established a promotion team for the establishment of the Ministry of Population under the Prime Minister’s Office, and that First Deputy Minister of State for Government Kim Jong-moon would be the head of the team.
There are also voices within the Democratic Party calling for an agreement to be passed on the ‘Lee Jae-myung’s’ basic social bills as a condition of agreeing to the establishment of the Ministry of Population. An official from the Democratic Party’s welfare committee said, “Instead of giving up the creation of a new population department, we could ask for a promise to agree on basic social bills.”
