Crisis in Niger: Presidents Putin and Goïta call for a peaceful settlement

MOSCOW, August 15, 2023 – Russian President Vladimir Putin and Malian leader Assimi Goïta discussed the crisis in Niger on Tuesday, the Kremlin announced, and called for a peaceful settlement in the country, the scene of a coup d’etat in late July. .

During this telephone interview, which took place “at the Malian initiative”, MM. Putin and Goïta “stressed the importance of resolving the situation around the Republic of Niger only by peaceful politico-diplomatic means”, specified the Russian presidency in a press release.

This appeal comes as the Community of West African States (ECOWAS), while favoring the path of dialogue, last week gave the green light to an armed intervention against the soldiers who took power on 26 July in Niger, by activating its “standby force”.

Vladimir Putin also spoke about the situation in Africa in a video message broadcast Tuesday at a conference on international security organized near Moscow.

In this message, he accused “the United States and its allies” of having brought about the “destruction” of the Libyan state with their military intervention in 2011, which, according to Mr. Putin, then exposed the countries of the Sahel and the Central African Republic to “direct threats from numerous terrorist groups”.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, for his part, accused the West of “maintaining hotbeds of conflict” on the African continent in order to take advantage of the natural resources of its former colonies.

“A multitude of anti-government and terrorist groups are being used for these purposes,” he told the conference.

He assured that the Russian Ministry of Defense would “continue to strengthen its cooperation in the military and technical field with the countries of Africa”, describing “the fight against neo-colonialism and the terrorist threat” as “foundation” cooperation between Moscow and African countries.
