Resolutions Living and Founder Dr. Reza Nabavi’s Legal Record

The 27-year-old son of supermodel Cindy Crawford and businessman Rande Gerber was found dead from a suspected overdose at the luxe Resolutions Living home in Santa Monica on Sept. 20. The sober living program is part of Resolutions Therapeutic Services, founded by Dr. Reza Nabavi, who has a history of criminal activity and licensing issues, according to state records obtained by USA TODAY. Nabavi is described on the company’s website as the founder and executive clinical director with over 20 years of clinical experience, but official documents show he struggled to obtain a psychology license due to multiple drug-related arrests and convictions.

In early 2002, Oakland Police Department officers found Nabavi, then 25, and a 15-year-old girl asleep in a car known for narcotics. A search of the vehicle uncovered methamphetamine, marijuana, a knife, a handgun and ammunition, per legal documents. Nabavi was arrested for possession for sale of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana for sale. He pleaded no contest to the first charge and the second was dropped, resulting in an Alameda County Circuit Court judge sentencing him to 36 months probation. Less than four weeks later, Nabavi was arrested again after Oakland police said he agreed to sell methamphetamine to a confidential informant. Like in his other case, Nabavi pleaded no contest to possession of a controlled substance and received the same sentence.

Nabavi first applied for his license in 2004, but the California Board of Psychology denied his application because of his arrests, the documents show. He reapplied in 2005 and was denied again before registering as a psychological assistant in January 2006. However, his registration was revoked the following month while Nabavi and the board came to an agreement on license conditions due to his previous two criminal convictions. Nabavi was ultimately given a five-year probationary term requiring him to undergo to a psychological evaluation, notify his employer of his probation, be monitored weekly by a California-licensed psychologist, enter a drug and alcohol abuse treatment program, commit to ongoing treatment.

Family Legacy and Candid Battles with Mental Health

Born in California in 1999, Gerber was one of two children Crawford shared with businessman Rande Gerber. Like his sister, Kaia Gerber, he entered the modeling industry at a young age, making his runway debut for Italian label Moschino aged just 16. He went on to walk for brands including Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, Bottega Veneta, as well as US labels Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren. Gerber modeled in campaigns for Calvin Klein, Celine, Pepsi and Omega, and for magazines including GQ Style and The New York Times Style Magazine. He also worked as an investor and entrepreneur, according to a biography on DNA Model Management, which signed Gerber in 2019.

Gerber had been open about his mental health struggles and drug use in recent years. Appearing on the Studio 22 podcast in 2023, he discussed using his platforms to raise mental health awareness, calling the issue such a big part of my life. He ran his own Mental Health Mondays initiative. Crawford’s publicist told CNN on Sunday: The family is asking for privacy during this very difficult and painful time.

Especially after Presley got a DUI (in 2018), George would advise, 'Don't do that, it's not smart. Be careful.' More recently, George shared loving notes like, 'I am here for you,' that kind of stuff.

George has always been the person people turn to when they're going through something, and with something of this magnitude, that isn't going to change. They added, It doesn't matter how busy he is or what he has going on in his own life — if Rande or anyone in the family needs him, everything else stops. It's really that simple. That's what family does.

Rande became a prominent figure in the hospitality industry years ago through his Gerber Group, which operated bars, lounges and restaurants in hotels and entertainment venues around the world. Rande later joined forces with Clooney and real estate developer Mike Meldman to create Casamigos tequila. The brand began as a private venture among friends before becoming a major spirits company.
