Three weeks remain until the XXI edition of the National Press Softball Tournament begins in Holguín, which this time will have eight teams representing nine provinces of the country.
The Pirates of La Isla de la Juventud, one of the squads with the most experience in these matters, are ready to surprise this year, with a roster that features three reinforcements, including two debutants.

“I think it’s time for La Isla to surprise. The boys have been preparing since we qualified in the zone where I saw a different team,” he declared to Cubajournalists Joao Fariñas, a player who keeps in his log five crowns won when he was a member of Medios Nacionales.
“If they believe it and assume it, they can be a winning team. From my experience I tell you that mentality is everything. I also think it can be a plus to be one of the least valued and have the surprise factor on their side,” she added.
In addition to Fariñas, the list includes Prensa Latina journalist Rafael Arzuaga, a magnificent signing who has also won several tournaments with the team that represents the country’s capital.
The Pirates, as is the case in baseball in our national series, are famous for their combativeness, and although their best performance in these tournaments for journalists is just a seventh place, this time they are determined to make history.
“For the first time we are going with a full team. The preparation has not been the best but we have made several stops,” declared its director Yoel Pozo.
The captain of the team also stressed that the strength is in the offense and pitching, and acknowledged that in previous seasons they have not shown good defense, but this time that area has been reinforced.

“This is our year, we are going for the podium,” he said optimistically.
The Island will debut on September 27 against the hosts from Holguín, and will complete the tough opening day facing the teams from Las Tunas and Sancti Spíritus.
