The oldest and most prestigious urban marathon in the world

The Boston Marathon is the oldest urban marathon in the world. It began in 1897 as the first urban race in the world, following the inspiration the event organizers received from the first Olympics held a year earlier in Athens, Greece.

This race has a special history when in 1967 it became the first ever marathon race in which a woman competed. This was not the choice of the race organizers, but the extraordinary determination of Catherine Schweitzer, who signed up for the race with the initials (K.W. Schweitzer) despite the ban on women participating in it in those years. Despite violent attempts by the organizers to prevent her from running, she finished it and proved to the whole world that women are also capable of finishing a marathon race.
