What is Visual Hygiene?

Its objective is the preservation of health and the prevention of diseases, therefore, Visual Hygiene is a set of standards, designed to control the factors that can cause a harmful effect on vision.

How can we improve visual efficiency with advice from the optician/optometrist?

1. 6/20/20 Rule

Rest every 20 minutes, looking at objects at a minimum of 6 meters for 20 seconds (at least).
The work table should be placed, if possible, in front of a window to be able to look into the distance.

2. Room temperature

Keep the study room well ventilated and at a normal temperature, avoiding continuous exposure to air conditioning or heating.

3. Lighting

It is advisable to work with ambient light on the ceiling and a more powerful one directed at the work object. Trying to avoid direct light on the eyes and shadows, as they cause eye fatigue.

Direct light should be on the left if you are right-handed and on the right if you are left-handed, to avoid shadows.

4. Working distance

In near vision, maintain Harmon’s distance (distance from the elbow to the first phalanx of the middle finger, approximately 40cm), being aware of not limiting it.

5. Posture

The correct position is very important, we must have our back straight on the back of the chair and touch the ground with our feet. Try to avoid twisting your head or neck and therefore reading in bed or on the floor.
The work table must be in a plane of about 45º (a lectern can be used).

6. Peripheral vision

When we carry out activities with central vision (examples: reading, writing, etc…) we must be aware of peripheral vision, that is, of what surrounds us. Avoiding entering “tunnel” vision and possible progression of myopia.

7. Do outdoor activities

Do sports, field trips and games that require the use of distant vision (soccer, tennis, etc.) to relax accommodation and visual stress.

8. Importance of blinking

Normally we blink on average about 20 times per minute. Doing it between 8-10 times when we are in front of electronic devices. This means that the decrease in blinking causes the tear to evaporate sooner, in addition to not producing new healthy tears in order to clean and maintain the ocular surface intact.

9. Avoid TV glare

As far as television is concerned, glare should be avoided, it should never be watched with the light off in the room, nor too close, nor lying on the floor.
