On November 10, Dr. Thongchai Keeratihatthayakorn, Acting Director-General of the Department of Disease Control, stated that school is now open for the semester, and it is a time when students gather in groups to do activities and have food and water together. If food and water are not clean and are contaminated with food and waterborne pathogens, it can cause illness with acute diarrhea.

Information from the Epidemiology Division, Department of Disease Control, shows that from 1 Jan. – 31 Oct. ’23, 610,362 patients were found nationwide, with 1 death. An outbreak of acute diarrhea was notified on 3 Nov. 2023, caused by norovirus in 103 patients, including 88 students and 15 staff. Dr. Thongchai emphasized the importance of following hygiene principles to prevent illness from diseases transmitted through food and water.

Dr. Sophon Iamsirithaworn, Deputy Director General of the Department of Disease Control, added that initial treatment for acute diarrhea includes drinking mineral salt solution (ORS) to prevent dehydration. If symptoms do not improve or are severe, it is advised to seek medical attention immediately. Preventive measures must adhere to the principles of “Eat cooked-hot-clean” and include eating freshly cooked food, thoroughly heating stored food, and ensuring cleanliness in food and water consumption.
