Title: Bangkok Ensures Measures to Prevent and Control Influenza Spread in Schools

Date: October 27, 2023

Location: Bangkok

In an effort to safeguard the health of students and prevent the spread of influenza, the Bangkok Health Office (OHI) has announced a series of measures for schools under its jurisdiction. Mr. Sunthorn Sunthornchat, Director of the OHI, emphasized the importance of preparing for the second semester of the 2023 academic year.

To effectively combat influenza in schools, the Office of the Provincial Administrative Organization in Bangkok has devised various prevention and control strategies. These measures include launching public relations campaigns through brochures and online media platforms to raise awareness among students and parents about the importance of protecting oneself from influenza.

Furthermore, guidelines will be disseminated to schools regarding the screening and isolation of students displaying flu-like symptoms. This proactive approach aims to prevent the transmission of influenza and mitigate outbreaks within school settings.

Influenza is primarily transmitted through droplets from coughing or sneezing, as well as through close contact or sharing personal belongings with infected individuals. To mitigate the risk of contracting the virus, preventive practices such as covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, wearing masks in public spaces, regular handwashing with soap or alcohol-based sanitizers, and avoiding close contact with sick individuals are strongly recommended.

In the event that students present flu-like symptoms, it is advised that they wear masks immediately and seek medical attention. If diagnosed with influenza, students are advised to take prescribed medication, rest, maintain hydration, and separate from others for approximately 5-7 days or until symptoms subside. Schools will provide designated areas for isolated students and will notify parents to arrange for medical visits and treatment at home.

Ms. Suphon Khumwong, Deputy Director of the Office of Education (EEA) and Acting Director of the Bangkok Education Office, assured that measures have been put in place to ensure comprehensive safety in educational institutions. The Office of Education has collaborated with the district office to communicate the guidelines and expectations for the second semester of the academic year 2023 to all schools in Bangkok.

Schools under the supervision of the district office must adhere to safety protocols, including the assessment of school premises, classrooms, and children’s play equipment, to guarantee cleanliness and a safe learning environment. Additionally, guidelines for the surveillance, prevention, and control of influenza will be shared with students, teachers, and educational personnel. Government teachers and educational personnel will also conduct regular health checks to identify and isolate sick students in the nurse’s room, with parents subsequently advised to seek medical attention for their children.

These proactive steps and collaborations between health and education authorities aim to minimize the risk of influenza outbreaks and ensure the well-being of students and staff members within the educational system in Bangkok.
