Health Officials Warn of Diarrhea Risk in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province

The Disease Prevention and Control Office 11 in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province is warning people, especially school-age children, to be cautious of the risk of diarrhea. The office recommends adhering to the principle of “eat cooked, hot, clean” to prevent illness from food and water-borne diseases.

Dr. Kraisorn Tothapthiang, Director of the Disease Prevention and Control Office 11, explained that the risk of diarrhea is heightened during the current school semester, as students often gather in groups for activities where food and water are shared. If the food, water, or ice is contaminated, it can lead to the spread of various germs, particularly during the humid and cool weather. This can result in severe diarrhea, especially in young children and the elderly who have lower immunity.

According to information from Health Zone 11, from January 1 to November 5, 2023, a total of 41,835 patients were diagnosed with acute diarrhea, with no reported deaths. The most affected age groups are 0-4 years, 5-9 years, and 15-24 years. Phuket Province has the highest sickness rate, with a trend of increasing cases every year.

Diarrhea is a disease transmitted through food and water, and can be found in every season. The germs enter the body through contaminated food and water, causing symptoms such as stomach pain, loose diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. If one is sick with diarrhea, initial treatment involves drinking Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) to prevent dehydration. If symptoms do not improve or become severe, medical attention should be sought immediately.

Preventative measures recommended by the Disease Prevention and Control Office include eating freshly cooked food, thoroughly heating stored food before consumption, and washing hands thoroughly with soap and water. Additionally, consuming clean drinking water with FDA or GMP marks or boiled water is advised.

For more information, individuals can contact the Department of Disease Control hotline at 1422.

The office emphasizes the importance of being vigilant and following these preventative measures to reduce the risk of diarrhea, especially during this period of heightened susceptibility.
