Preventing Epidemic Transmission of Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika through Effective Mosquito Control – Regional Health Agency Strategies

When a health professional identifies a case of dengue, chikungunya or Zika, he or she reports it to the Regional Health Agency (ARS) through the notifiable disease system (MDO). The ARS then conducts an epidemiological investigation to identify the places the patient attends during their period of viremia (a contagious period when a person can transmit the virus to a mosquito during a bite).

In fact, it is on this occasion that an epidemic transmission chain could be triggered: the person carrying the virus is bitten by a tiger mosquito which, by having an infection, could contaminate another person through stick them.

To limit this risk of transmission, the ARS then mobilizes its operator (INOVALYS or its subcontractor LEAV in Vendée at the moment) to search for the possible presence of tiger mosquitoes in places that are often identified as a risk.

Currently, in the absence of a vaccine and specific treatment against these diseases, the fight against tiger mosquitoes is still the main method of action. This fight involves the mechanical suppression of larval breeding sites specific to this species and, if necessary, an adult insecticide treatment (an insecticide specific to the adult stage, without eliminating with the other three stages (egg, larva, nymph)).

This is to prevent tiger mosquitoes from biting the sick person and transmitting the disease to other people nearby.
