The Office of Disease Prevention and Control 12 in Songkhla Province has issued an advisory to parents to closely monitor their children’s health during the rainy season, particularly regarding respiratory infections from the RSV virus (RSV). The office emphasizes the importance of prevention, such as frequent hand-washing, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms worsen.

Dr. Wanwisak Kanchanaporn, Deputy Director of the Office of Disease Prevention and Control 12 in Songkhla Province, revealed that from 2017-2023, there were 27,673 cases of respiratory infections caused by the RSV virus in children aged 0-5 years, resulting in 125 deaths. The majority of cases were found in children aged 1-3 years, with the highest number in Phatthalung Province.

The RSV virus causes diseases related to the respiratory tract and can affect individuals of all ages, although symptoms are more severe in young children and elderly people with chronic medical conditions. Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat, shortness of breath, and lethargy.

Dr. Wanwisakha stressed that there is currently no vaccine to prevent RSV, so parents are advised to observe their children’s symptoms, practice good hygiene, and avoid crowded places. Educational institutions are also encouraged to implement preventive measures, such as screening sick students, providing handwashing stations, and organizing exercise activities to boost students’ immunity.

The Department of Disease Control hotline, 1422, is available for further information and assistance. Parents and educational institutions are urged to take necessary precautions to protect children from respiratory infections during the rainy season.]
