Bangkok Implements Precautionary Measures Against Smallpox Outbreaks

Bangkok, Thailand – In response to an increase in smallpox outbreaks among youth and the MSM (men who have sex with men) group, the Bangkok Medical Office (MD) is taking proactive steps to prepare hospitals under its jurisdiction. Mrs. Lertlak Leelasawang, the Director of MD, recently shared details about the city’s preparations and guidelines for disease prevention.

Smallpox is a highly contagious viral disease that manifests through symptoms including fever, chills, headache, enlarged lymph nodes, muscle pain, fatigue, and occasionally a cough or back pain. Within 1-3 days of developing a fever, patients typically develop a rash that starts on the face and spreads to other parts of the body. The rash then forms pustules, which eventually scab and fall off. The illness typically lasts for 2-4 weeks, and while most patients recover on their own, serious complications can arise for individuals with low immunity or congenital diseases. These complications include pneumonia and even death.

If a patient is suspected of having smallpox, they will be immediately quarantined and reported according to the guidelines provided by the Ministry of Public Health. Additionally, individuals are urged to stay updated on the latest news, especially before traveling to foreign countries experiencing smallpox outbreaks. Precautionary measures such as avoiding contact with carrier animals and closely observing symptoms upon returning from affected countries can help prevent the spread of the disease.

The preventive measures recommended for smallpox are similar to those used to prevent COVID-19. Individuals are advised to wash their hands frequently with soap or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers, maintain physical distance from sick individuals or those with blisters or pustules, and follow universal prevention measures. Prompt medical attention is crucial if symptoms such as fever, rashes on the face, arms, and legs are observed.

The Bangkok Sexual Health Clinic (also known as BKK Pride Clinic) offers counseling services specifically for men who have sex with men and have multiple sexual partners. This clinic, which has 27 locations including Central Hospital, Taksin Hospital, Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital, Luang Por Thaweesak Chutintharo Uthit Hospital, Wejkarunrat Hospital, Lat Krabang Hospital Bangkok, Ratchapipat Hospital, and Sirindhorn Hospital, can provide guidance and support.

Sirindhorn Hospital has been assigned as the center for emerging disease control operations, responsible for closely monitoring information, controlling and supervising the smallpox situation. All hospitals in Bangkok, including emergency rooms, outpatient departments, and specialized clinics such as sexually transmitted disease clinics, skin disease clinics, and HIV treatment clinics, have been instructed to monitor patients and report any suspected cases to the administrators and Ministry of Public Health. The Urban Institute for Disease Control and Prevention (NIDA) is actively investigating all cases to swiftly control and reduce the spread of the disease.

While smallpox vaccination can reduce the risk of infection, it is recommended only for individuals who are at risk of exposure or in close proximity to infected animals or people. Vaccinations should ideally be administered within 14 days of potential exposure. Individuals who experience symptoms of illness are advised to seek immediate medical attention or consult with a doctor via telemedicine platforms such as the “Doctor Bangkok” application, which allows for quick diagnosis, isolation, and quarantine.

For more information, the public can contact the Bangkok Medical Office health hotline at 1646, available 24 hours a day. Staying vigilant and following the recommended guidelines will help prevent the further spread of smallpox within the city.]
