Fire, since the creation of man, has been a transcendental element for the evolution and development of peoples. Currently, fire is an important part of civilization to carry the lifestyle and culture of humanity. However, the irresponsible use of this element can cause forest fires.

Sepal. In Ecuador, ninety-nine percent of forest fires are caused by man, having listed losses of natural territories. In this way, these environmental problems are becoming more frequent and dangerous, and thereby intensifying the impacts of climate change. Based on these incidents, the Ministry of the Environment, Water and Ecological Transition (MAATE), in coordination with national and local strategic actors, implemented the campaign called: ‘Together we prevent Forest Fires’. This campaign seeks to raise awareness in society about the importance of preventing forest fires, in addition to promoting the conservation of natural landscapes and the care of human life.

Voices. Francisco Hugo, zone 3 director of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition (MAATE), said that the statistics regarding forest fires have not decreased, they have continued to increase and, unfortunately, in a decade these disasters have increased. Probably, climate change is one of the factors that, painfully, generate or have been generating a greater potential for forest fires; likewise, the activity of people somehow generates greater prospecting for the generation of forest fires, it was learned.

Fact. This initiative will focus on providing training to park ranger personnel so that, in some way, they have greater control. Thus, Zonal Directorate 3 currently has approximately eighty park rangers. Likewise, work will be done with members of the communities and civil society, for which different environmental education programs and the proper use of fire in the páramos and in different natural environments have been prepared.

Details. Dayana Campaña, zone 3 director of the Risk Management Secretariat, stated that there are alliances with other security and control entities in the event of a fire. The project will look for the method of how to articulate with the community members so that an adequate use of fire is made in agricultural activities.

Ati remembered that when she was little, the burning of straw was carried out without any control, nor measuring the consequences and the damages and risks that it generated; however, she added that currently there is a little more awareness when proceeding with the burning, but that they require training workshops to learn more about the subject and broaden the panorama of the place they inhabit.

Avoid burning agricultural stubble in the summer, avoid throwing cigarette butts in nearby vegetation areas, do not burn garbage in wooded areas.
