LE FIGARO. – The paramilitary group Wagnercame into rebellion against the Russian Defense Ministry,after his boss, the oligarch Yevgeny Prigojine, accused the regular army of having killed a large number of its mercenaries in bombardments. What do you think of this accusation?
General Francois CHAUVANCY – If these bombings are proven, it is because Moscow wanted to put out of harm’s way Prigojine, who is a free spirit constantly undermining publicly the influence of the Russian army. He has made outrageous remarks in recent months, accusing the Ministry of Defense in particular of considering its soldiers as cannon fodder. This strike is a way like any other to neutralize it. But in my opinion, the dismantling of the Wagner structure had been underway for several weeks.
