Expressing concerns about security threats due to North Korea’s deployment of troops to Russia
UN: “Please play an active role in restoring Korean multilateralism”
Prime Minister Han Deok-soo met with the United Nations General Assembly Presidents’ Association (UNCPGA) delegation on the 29th and discussed international issues, including the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
Prime Minister Han first met with Philemon Yang, President of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (former Prime Minister of Cameroon), at the Lotte Hotel in Seoul on this day.
In the meeting, Prime Minister Han expressed concern that “North Korea is sending troops to Russia, posing a serious security threat to the Korean Peninsula and the international community.”
At the same time, he asked, “Please support the August 15 unification doctrine based on the values of freedom, peace, and prosperity.”
Prime Minister Han also said, “In an era where conflicts and geopolitical competition are intensifying around the world and emerging security threats such as climate change and artificial intelligence (AI) are intensifying, the United Nations must become the center of global solidarity.”
Prime Minister Han expected the UN General Assembly to play a leading role in strengthening international solidarity.
Chairman Yang of the General Assembly evaluated Korea’s will to contribute to the peace and prosperity of the international community and requested that “Korea continue to play an active role in responding to major international issues and restoring multilateralism.”
Prime Minister Han then had lunch with the UNCPGA delegation.
The UNCPGA delegation is visiting Korea for two days starting today to attend the general meeting held in Seoul.
UNCPGA is a consultative body comprised of current and former presidents of the United Nations General Assembly. Former Prime Minister Han Seung-soo, who served as chairman of the 56th General Assembly from 2022 to 2025, was also present at the luncheon.
Prime Minister Han mentioned the situation in which international conflicts are intensifying in the Middle East and Ukraine and the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is delayed, and asked people to contribute to finding multilateral solutions to global issues.
The UNCPGA delegation expressed hope that Korea will continue to lead efforts to strengthen solidarity in the international community and respond to global issues, centered around the United Nations.
