Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong spoke on the phone with Anwar Ibrahim, who was sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Malaysia, on Friday. PM Lee invited Mr Anwar to come to Singapore soon.

“I look forward to working with him (Mr Anwar) and the new government to further strengthen our bilateral relationship,” PM Lee said in his Facebook post.

PM Lee, who said he had known Mr Anwar for many years, said he last met him in 2018. Mr. Anwar, who had arrived in Singapore at that time, had addressed a conference on the importance of bilateral relations between Singapore and Malaysia.

“Singapore and Malaysia are close partner countries. The two countries have a long-standing friendship. We can do more to improve our bilateral relationship,” PM Lee noted.

Responding to Prime Minister Lee on social media, Mr Anwar thanked him for the phone call and greeting.

Mr Anwar posted on Twitter, “As close neighbors and partners in ASEAN, Malaysia and Singapore have many common features and an intertwined history.

“I look forward to meeting you at the next opportunity and working together to further advance Malaysia-Singapore relations,” he said.
