by time news

Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed a number of topics with Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi by telephone, including the situation in southeastern Ukraine. The head of the Italian government called on Mr. Putin to de-escalate.

A statement posted on the Italian government’s website says that during the conversation, Mr. Draghi “emphasized the importance of de-escalation, as an aggravation of the crisis could lead to serious consequences.”

The Kremlin’s report on the meeting says that “in connection with the concern expressed by Mario Draghi over the development of the situation around Ukraine, Vladimir Putin assessed the actions of Kiev, which is evading the fulfillment of its obligations, primarily on the political aspects of resolving the intra-Ukrainian conflict.”

The parties also discussed security issues in Europe. Mr. Putin outlined the key approaches of the Russian side in this regard, emphasizing the importance of observing the fundamental principle of the indivisibility of security, the Kremlin said.

In addition, issues related to cooperation in the trade, economic and energy fields were discussed. Mr. Putin asked that congratulations be conveyed to Italian President Sergio Mattarella, who was previously re-elected for a second term.
