(Owais Kayani) Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed to determine those responsible for the defects in the Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project and take strict action against them. Lining was not done, how unfortunate that such a big and important project was criminally negligent.
According to the details, an important meeting regarding the Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. A preliminary investigation report was submitted.
During the briefing in the meeting, it was informed that the electricity production decreased due to pressure drop in the right and left head race tunnels of Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project on April 29, 2024 and the electricity production from the power plant was completely stopped on May 2, 2024. Done, due to the closure of the project, the national exchequer is losing crores of rupees, the place where the current problem has arisen is the rock burst zone.
It was further informed in the briefing that during the PTI regime in the year 2021 also due to the abnormal drop in pressure in the head race tunnel, a significant decrease in the production of electricity was seen from the project, but this abnormal change in pressure was ignored. Unreported and the issue was deliberately suppressed, no repair work was done regarding the failure of the Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project in 2021 during the PTI regime, which continued to increase the losses. It was a criminal negligence.
The Prime Minister was told that the failure in the Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project in 2021 is also being made a part of the investigation report. Regarding the construction of the power project, geophysical and seismic factors were ignored, proper concrete lining of the head race tunnel was not done, timely third party validation of the project was not done.

The Prime Minister said that the experts pointed out that there were defects in the design, concrete lining was not done, how unfortunate that such a large and important project was criminally neglected. Why was it not done? Criminal negligence was committed by not getting the third party validation of the project done.
The Prime Minister directed to form an immediate committee regarding the reactivation of Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ataullah Tarar, Federal Minister for Power Owais Ahmed Khan Leghari, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema in the meeting. Petroleum Mossadegh Malik, Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Jahanzeb Khan, Prime Minister’s Coordinator Rana Ehsan Afzal, Chairman WAPDA Lieutenant General Retired Sajjad Ghani, Former Federal Interior Secretary Shahid Khan and other relevant senior government officials participated.
