Prince Haakon traveled alone to Paris for the Olympics on August 6, 2024. The participation of Princess Mette-Marit was canceled at short notice, likely due to the arrest of her son Marius Borg Høiby. Now the heir to the throne is speaking for the first time.

It is with serious words that Prince Haakon, 51, reacts to the events of the last few days: In Paris, the heir to the throne was asked about the arrest of his stepson Marius Borg Høiby, 27. The eldest son of Princess Mette-Marit, 50, is reported to have been arrested on August 4, 2024. Following this, his mother abruptly canceled her planned trip to the Olympics; Haakon appeared alone in Paris and is now facing pressing questions.

Prince Haakon on Marius Borg Høiby: “It is a serious matter”

On Wednesday, August 7, the 51-year-old visited, among other places, the Olympic Village, where, of course, the Norwegian athletes are housed during the games in Paris. The portal “Dana Press” reports that Haakon was addressed regarding the negative headlines surrounding Marius Borg Høiby. Instead of evading a clear answer or brushing off questions, the prince took time for the inquiries from the Norwegian broadcaster TV2. When asked about Høiby’s scandal, Haakon stated: “It is a serious matter when the police are involved, as they are. At the same time, I do not think it is right for me to interfere in the case now.”

As the son of the Crown Princess, the 27-year-old is obviously considered a member of the Norwegian royal family. A fact that Prince Haakon does not try to deny: “It is clear that a case like this also concerns me,” he adds, “but I am here to support our team at the Olympics, and fantastic performances are being delivered here.” When asked about the next steps, the 51-year-old cautiously said: “We are very interested in ensuring that all parties in this case are well taken care of, so we are taking it one day at a time.” He then referred to Høiby’s lawyer, Øyvind Bratlien.

Mette-Marit Was Looking Forward to Paris

Regarding the absence of his wife, Prince Haakon says: “She had hoped to be there and was looking forward to it, but in families it is sometimes just important to be there. The decision we made was for her to stay home this time while I go.”

These are serious accusations against the eldest son of Princess Mette-Marit: As reported by the Norwegian edition of “Se og Hør” on Tuesday, Marius Borg Høiby was arrested by the police. He is alleged to have become violent towards a woman whose name has not been disclosed.

Marius Borg Høiby and the Victim Have a Relationship

The Oslo police confirmed to “Se og Hør” that they were called to an apartment on Sunday morning, August 4. “One person was arrested and charged with assault and later released from custody,” it states. Øyvind Bratlien, Marius Borg Høiby’s lawyer, explains that the charge refers to “assault,” which under the law is the least serious form of violence.

On August 7, the Oslo police confirmed in a press release, which several Norwegian media, including “Dagbladet,” received: “There is a relationship between the accused and the victim.” Since Marius’ name had already appeared in several publications reporting on the incident, the authorities now also confirm that the accused is indeed Princess Mette-Marit’s son.
