Prince Harry left the UK after a brief visit to mark the 10th anniversary of his Invictus Games, without meeting his father King Charles III or his brother Prince William. A new blow to already strained family relations.
A solo visit that turns into a royal fiasco
Arriving in London on Wednesday to celebrate a decade of the Invictus Games at Saint Paul’s Cathedral, the Duke of Sussex hoped to take advantage of this trip to reconnect with your family. But that was without taking into account the overloaded schedule of King Charles, who was at the same time presiding over a garden party at Buckingham Palace.
A spokesperson for the prince had to confirm thata father-son interview was unthinkable due to royal planning. The last tête-à-tête between Harry and Charles dates back to February, after the announcement of the sovereign’s cancer diagnosis. The Duke of Sussex was also unable to see his older brother William during his stay.
Family tensions still high
Since his withdrawal from the royal family in 2020 and his move to California with Meghan Markle and their children Archie and Lilibet, Prince Harry has maintained frosty relationships with the rest of the Windsor clan. His notable absence from recent royal events has only accentuated the gap.
At the ceremony of Invictus Games, Diana’s youngest appeared alone, supported only by his late mother’s siblings. A stark contrast to the launch of the games in 2014, where he was surrounded by Prince Charles, Camilla and Prince William.
An increasingly uncertain royal future
This new rebuff says a lot about the state of relations between Harry and the British Crown. According to royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams, the situation is “unprecedented” and the only way to repair the breach would be through private discussions. But King Charles seems determined to keep your son away.
Prince Harry will now join Meghan Markle in Nigeria for a tour at the invitation of the Chief of Defense Staff. A new chapter opens for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, far from Buckingham and his family dramas. It remains to be seen whether the long-awaited reconciliation with the royal family will one day take place.
