Prinz Harry is not allowed to spend any private funds on police protection during his stays in Great Britain. A London court ruled on Tuesday. The royal couple had been put on a lower risk level by police authorities following their decision to no longer be active members of the royal family.

Prince Harry is suing against this gradation in another procedure that has not yet been decided. In addition, after the downgrading, the 38-year-old offered to pay for the security guards from Scotland Yard with his own funds until further notice. The police department declined the offer. The Duke of Sussex therefore sued the British Home Office – and was dismissed on Tuesday.

The Duke’s lawyers had requested a full investigation into whether the police department had any authority to deny Harry’s reimbursement proposal. The judge at the London High Court did not agree. Harry had argued he didn’t want to burden the taxpayer with the cost of his personal security. His lawyers had also stated that the police received remuneration for their work in other cases, such as from football clubs to maintain security in sensitive games.

The Interior Ministry’s lawyers, on the other hand, had argued that these cases could not be compared. In the duke’s case, normal police officers would not have been deployed, but special forces trained to act as bodyguards. It is a question of principle whether it should be allowed “that a very wealthy person can buy protection from the police,” according to the Interior Ministry.

The High Court still has to decide in another hearing after a hearing whether the level of protection for Harry, his wife Meghan and their two children could be downgraded overall when staying in Great Britain.

It wasn’t the only lawsuit that Harry, who moved to California with his family, is conducting in the UK: In three other lawsuits, the Duke has sued three different newspaper publishers that he believes had obtained information through unlawful means, such as tapping his cell phone .
