Prince William: Male Suicide a “National Catastrophe” – UK Stats & Mental Health Plea

by Sofia Alvarez Entertainment Editor

The prevalence of male suicide in the UK has been described as a “national catastrophe” by Prince William, who spoke candidly about the issue and his own emotional journey in a recent radio appearance. The Prince’s remarks, made during a special episode of BBC Radio 1’s Life Hacks, underscore a growing concern about mental health among men and the urgent need for greater openness and support. This conversation about men’s mental health comes as suicide rates continue to be a leading cause of death for young people in England and Wales.

William emphasized the importance of male role models publicly discussing their mental health struggles, believing it will encourage other men to do the same and normalize conversations around emotional wellbeing. He reflected on his own process of understanding his feelings, stating, “I take a long time trying to understand my emotions and why I feel like I do, and I feel like that’s a really important process to do every now and again, to check in with yourself and work out why you’re feeling like you do.” He acknowledged that identifying the root cause isn’t always straightforward, but stressed the temporary nature of mental health crises, adding, “you can have a strong mental health crisis moment but it will pass.”

A Rising Crisis Among Young Men

The Prince’s intervention comes as new data highlights the severity of the situation. According to the Office for National Statistics, suicide was the leading cause of death among young people aged 20 to 34 in England and Wales in 2024. Parliamentary research further details the trends and contributing factors to suicide rates across the UK.

The Royal Foundation is actively contributing to addressing this crisis, committing £1 million to the development of a National Suicide Prevention Network. This initiative aims to bolster support services and improve access to mental health resources across the country. The Prince’s long-standing advocacy for mental health awareness has positioned him as a key voice in destigmatizing these issues and promoting proactive care.

The Power of Open Conversation

During the panel discussion, which is set to air in full on Wednesday evening, Prince William encouraged listeners to prioritize self-awareness and self-compassion. “Learn to love yourself and understand yourself,” he advised, adding that seeking support from mental health charities can be a crucial “little stepping stone” in navigating difficult times. He expressed hope that increased dialogue and education will gradually diminish the stigma surrounding mental health, ultimately reducing the incidence of suicide.

The conversation wasn’t solely focused on the challenges. William too offered a message of hope. “And if we talk about that more, and educate people more, then hopefully the idea of suicide keeps being pushed further and further away. Due to the fact that you know that tomorrow, you might wake up and you might feel very different.”

Sharing Experiences: Professor Green Joins the Discussion

Prince William wasn’t alone in sharing his perspective. The panel also included rapper Stephen Manderson, known professionally as Professor Green, who has been a vocal advocate for mental health awareness for years. Manderson previously spoke about his personal experience with loss in a 2015 BBC documentary, Suicide and Me, detailing the impact of his father’s suicide. He emphasized the importance of creating supportive networks and accessible services for those in need.

Manderson also highlighted the significance of Prince William’s involvement, stating that the Prince’s openness is “incredibly important…which I don’t suppose people would necessarily expect.” He believes William’s willingness to share his own experiences helps to shine a light on a topic that is often avoided.

The rapper shared a personal sentiment, expressing concern for his own son’s future. “I’ve got a little boy and I hate to think of him growing up in a world where he doesn’t have a circle of friends that he knows he can go to, or services that he knows he can access if in a time of need, at a time when he perhaps doesn’t have me.”

A Family Affair: William on His Children

In a lighter moment during the discussion, Prince William jokingly revealed that his children are quite forthcoming with their feelings, sometimes “too much.” He added, with affection, “I obtain all the details, which I love; it’s amazing.” This anecdote underscores the importance of fostering open communication within families and creating a safe space for children to express their emotions.

The Prince’s comments and the broader conversation surrounding male suicide are part of a larger effort to address the mental health crisis in the UK. As awareness grows and resources develop into more accessible, there is hope that more men will feel empowered to seek help and break down the barriers that prevent them from speaking openly about their struggles. The full discussion with Prince William and Professor Green will be available on BBC Radio 1’s Life Hacks on Wednesday evening, offering further insights into this critical issue.
