At least 120 people have been killed in a prison attack in Syria. The prison was attacked during a battle between US-backed Kurdish forces and members of ISIS (ISIS). The prison was the deadliest terrorist attack by the ISIL since they lost their territory in 2019. The U.S. – based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says 77 IS militants, 39 Kurdish soldiers, members of the Interior Ministry and prison guards have been killed in the attacks since Thursday. ISIL claimed responsibility for the prison attack through its Amakh media.

The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a Kurdish-controlled Qawairan prison in the city of Hasak. Zohr reported that seven civilians had been killed in the ongoing attacks. But the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces said Sunday that they had strengthened their siege with the help of US troops and that 17 soldiers had been killed. The SDF said it had recaptured 104 prisoners who had escaped after the attack on the jail. The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a jail, removing hundreds of protesters by truck. But it is not clear how many people were in jail in total. But there were facilities here to house thousands of prisoners. Human Rights Watch estimates that there are 12,000 inmates in prisons, ranging from 2,000 to 4,000 in 50 countries.
