Dutch footballer Quincy Promes was put on trial on allegations of cocaine smuggling. Now he has been sentenced to a long prison sentence.

Dutch professional footballer Quincy Promes has been sentenced in absentia by a court in Amsterdam to six years in prison for cocaine smuggling. Promes is currently said to be in Russia and plays for Spartak Moscow. He also did not take part in the trial.

The court found it proven that he was involved in smuggling around 1,350 kilograms of cocaine through the port of Antwerp in January 2020. A second defendant, a cousin of Promes, was also sentenced to six years in prison.

Promes has a criminal record

The prosecution had called for nine years in prison. The 32-year-old former Ajax Amsterdam player had not made any statement about the allegations in court. According to his defense attorneys, he is innocent. Promes made his debut for the Dutch national team in 2014. He had already been sentenced to prison for assault last year, but had appealed against the verdict.

The prosecution primarily presented intercepted, encrypted reports. In the court’s opinion, it is clear from these that Promes was involved in smuggling. The investigators tracked down the footballer thanks to a tip. It was about two loads of cocaine that had been smuggled between sacks of sea salt on a container ship from Brazil to Antwerp.
