In response to the comments generated by the video in which the president is apparently seen walking through the Historic Center of Panama City with a woman, the president spoke out.
The images show what appears to be Gustavo Petro laughing and walking with a woman through the streets of Casco Antiguo or Casco Viejo, the historic center of Panama. According to various Internet users, the woman accompanying the president is believed to be a well-known trans presenter.
Faced with the avalanche of messages questioning his private life, President Petro spoke out on Wednesday morning. In his statement, he stressed the importance of privacy as a bastion of personal freedom:
“I have always considered privacy to be the ‘last ratio’ of freedom, the last trench of freedom, and I will uphold this principle until I write about myself or die,” the president said.

Petro also condemned transphobic messages that have emerged in this context, harshly criticizing those sectors of society that perpetuate exclusion, ignorance and discrimination:
«These thousands of transphobic messages that have exploded in the hands of a right-wing society, deeply exclusive, ignorant and discriminatory, must be rejected by the president. Every progressive knows that human beings are equal and that the fight for that equality implies physical and mental emancipation. Therefore, no one who considers themselves human can generalize transphobia in weak minds or slavery and discrimination. This action does not express animality but brutality. That is why they kill the different and by the millions. That is why Nazis existed and exist.»
Finally, President Petro reaffirmed his sexual orientation, but made clear his rejection of any form of transphobia:
«I am heterosexual, but you will never hear or read a transphobic word from me“Because not only would he cease to be a man, but a human being,” the president concluded.
