An agreement between the governor-elect, Joaquín Díaz Menaand the Business Coordinating Council of Yucatan (CCE) allowed the selection of Ermilo Barrera Noveloa young Yucatecan internationalist of only 29 years of age, as Secretary of Economic Development and Labor (Sefoet) of the State.
The CCE is the highest representative body of the private sector and brings together the 14 business umbrella organizations of Yucatán. Jorge Ermilo Barrera Noveloborn on January 24, 1995 in Mérida, Yucatán, is a Mexican internationalist and public servant. He currently holds the position of Secretary of Economy in the government of Pueblaunder the administration of Sergio Salomón Céspedes Peregrina. Before his appointment in Yucatán, Barrera Novelo held the position of Secretary of Economy in the Government of Puebla, where he was also Director General of the Energy Agency.
Introducing him as part of his cabinet this Thursday, September 12, Díaz Mena recalled that during his campaign he made a commitment to the private sector that the ownership of this department would be decided by proposals from the business sector.
Barrera Novelo holds a degree in International Relations from the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM). He has completed a Diploma in Economics of Energy at the same institution and has studies in public policies from the Botín Foundation of Spain and the Getulio Vargas Foundation of Brazil. In addition, he has specialized in development project management for the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the energy system and its environmental impacts by Harvard University.
Before assuming this position, Barrera Novelo directed the State Energy Agency of Puebla, first as Planning Director, Promotion and Encouragement of Investment since the creation of the organization in November 2019, and subsequently as Director General As of October 21, 2021, following the resignation of Rodrigo Osorio DiazFrom 2018 to 2019, he worked at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commissionwhere he held the positions of advisor and deputy director of technical validation in the regulation of the electrical industry. Barrera Novelo announced his early departure from the Government of Puebla to join the first Government of the 4T in Yucatán on October 1st. “I will leave this position satisfied and certain that Puebla is better today because it transcends and accelerates its economic, human and technological dynamics,” he added.
Achievements in his management
During the administration of Jorge Ermilo Barrera Novelo, which began in October 2023, Puebla achieved important economic achievements, highlighting the growth in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). In the first half of 2024, the entity registered 2,646 million dollars in FDI, which represented a significant increase compared to the previous year. This progress positioned Puebla as the fourth state nationwide in attracting foreign investment, with a predominant focus on the automotive sector.
