‘Tactician-type’ leader who led Gwangju’s advance into ACLE
Excellent control of the team with strong charisma
Professional soccer K-League 1 Jeonbuk Hyundai selected Gwangju FC coach Lee Jeong-hyo as the successor to coach Kim Doo-hyun.
A soccer official said through Newsis on the 18th, “Jeonbuk is in the final stages of working with coach Lee Jeong-hyo to replace coach Kim Doo-hyun. “I understand they are planning to sign today and make an official announcement on the 19th.”
On the 16th, Jeonbuk announced the mutual termination of its contract with Coach Kim.
Coach Kim took charge of Jeonbuk after being evaluated as a leader with smart leadership and tactics to help the team rebound and establish a new operating system after the resignation of coach Dan Petrescu last May.
However, they suffered from a slump, not only the first ever lower split, but also the promotion playoffs (PO).
They defeated Seoul E-Land in K League 2 and confirmed their stay in the first division, but the reputation of the club with the most wins (9 times) in K League 1 was damaged.
In the end, Jeonbuk chose to part ways with Coach Kim for reform, and announced, “We plan to appoint the best person among the manager candidates with leadership skills and excellent tactical and strategic abilities to realize the team’s leap forward and rebuilding.”
It appears that a successor has been found quickly as planned.
It is said that Coach Lee, who led Gwangju and showed off his leadership skills in the K-League and Asian stages, was selected.
Coach Lee took charge of the professional team as the 7th coach of Gwangju in 2022.
Because he was unknown, there were not many expectations, but he promoted Gwangju to the first division in his first year in office.
Since then, he has led Gwangju to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League Elite (ACLE) for the first time in history, and is showing off good performance on the Asian stage this season.
Although he is a young leader, he has excellent ability to dominate the team with strong charisma.
He is evaluated as a leader who matches the type of person Jeonbuk wanted with ‘experience and leadership’ and ‘tactics and strategy’.
Meanwhile, a high-ranking Jeonbuk official expressed caution regarding the appointment of coach Lee, saying, “We have not yet decided on the final (negotiation) target (among the coach candidates), but we cannot sign a contract.”
