Emmanuel Macron said he would probably do “something completely different” from politics after the 2027 presidential election, after ten years as French president, during an exchange Wednesday with Kazakh students at the University of Astana.

“It is likely that I will do something completely different when I have finished” in 2027, at the end of two mandates as President of the Republic, said Emmanuel Macron. “But I will be very happy to have served my country for ten years as president,” he stressed. “And this opportunity could be yours,” he insisted.

Encouraging, in his concluding remarks, the students to be “engaged in political life and in public choices” whatever happens, Emmanuel Macron affirmed that “politics is not the exclusive domain of a handful of people” .

“In a democracy, public life is yours. And it is your duty, your responsibility and I think it is a magnificent experience,” continued Emmanuel Macron.

“I was not a politician”

“I tell you this because I was not a member of a political party, I was not a politician, a few months before being elected president” in 2017, argued the one who was nevertheless general secretary deputy of the Élysée (2012-2014) then minister of the Economy (2014-2016) before running for president in 2017.

The Head of State took the opportunity to defend, during his 50 minutes of exchanges with the students, his policy of “at the same time”, between “freedom” and “order”, also insisting on the need to “keep the ‘spirit of resistance’ even when its action is ‘unpopular’.

“We need both”, the left and the right, “we cannot walk with one leg”, he said, quoting General de Gaulle who said “the left is the movement”, “ the right is order.”

We must have “a vision that reconciles these deep aspirations that there are in all peoples, and in any case that there are in the French people, for freedom, for creation, for entrepreneurship, for “inventiveness and an aspiration for order, control and the values that go with it”, he said, judging that this is “not incompatible”.

Marine Le Pen favorite in the polls

The Head of State also highlighted his “three principles of action”: “explain things”, “stick to action” and “be attached to results”.

“It’s about trying each time to explain, to say things when I can do them, including when they are unpopular,” he underlined in reference to the difficult pension reform adopted in spring 2023 .

“It’s then about staying in action and having the spirit of resistance even when it’s unpopular because we’ve explained it, we think it’s good, not giving in to demagoguery” , he added. Finally, it’s about “being attached to the results, to the facts, and to looking to see if it really changes people’s lives,” he concluded.

According to a poll published on October 20, Marine Le Pen would exceed the 30% mark if the first round of the presidential election took place this Sunday. She would be six points ahead of former Prime Minister Édouard Philippe who remains the majority’s best candidate, indicates an Ifop-Fiducial poll published Monday on the Figaro website.
