Processor makers AMD and Xilinx complete $50 billion merger

by time news

American processor manufacturers AMD and Xilinx today, February 14, announced the completion of the merger. AMD buys Xilinx for $50 billion. When the companies originally agreed to the deal in October 2020, it was for $35 billion, but since then their shares have risen, so the amount has increased.

Xilinx specializes in so-called programmable logic integrated circuits, the logic of which is not set at release, but can be subsequently programmed for specific tasks. Such processors are suitable for use in rapidly developing technologies – for example, they are usually used in the infrastructure of 5G networks. AMD is one of the largest processor manufacturers in the world, so it produces products with a broader profile.

To complete the merger, the companies needed to obtain regulatory approval. At the end of January, it was announced that China had approved the deal – this was the last necessary approval, it made it possible to complete it. In February, two other companies in this field, Nvidia and Arm, reported that their $40 billion merger fell through due to serious resistance from regulators in different countries.
