“Creativity is made, it is not generated,” declares Procreate on its website, taking a firm stance against generative AI. While other graphic creation app publishers, such as Adobe, have embraced this technology by integrating image generation features from simple texts, the popular design app for iPad, Procreate, chooses a counter-current path. “We believe that machine learning is a fascinating technology that has a lot of merit, but the path that generative AI has taken is not the right one for us,” says its publisher, Savage Interactive. For them, generative AI, considered “a moral threat” to human creativity, is based on data theft, namely existing works on which it trains, and “leads us towards a sterile future.”

“I really fu*** hate generative AI,” stated James Cuda, CEO of Procreate, in a video posted on platform X.

This counter-current stance quickly sparked reactions from the digital artist community. Many creatives indeed praised the bold commitment made by Procreate to refuse to integrate generative AI. James Cuda admits he does not know where this position will lead his company, but “we are confident that we are on the right path to support human creativity,” he says.
