Professor Melfi, director of the Multidisciplinary Robotic Surgery Center of Aoup, returns to her homeland as a full professor at the University of Calabria.

After 40 years in Pisa, Franca Melfi, current director of the Multidisciplinary Robotic Surgery Center of Aoup and associate professor of Thoracic Surgery at the University of Pisa, as well as the current president of Eacts – European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery, returns to her home where she will take on the role of full professor at the University of Calabria (UniCal), where she has won the recently completed competition. In the coming months, her appointment will be passed through the Department Council of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and Nutrition, and finally the Board of Directors of the Calabrian university, after which she will take up her position.

“I warmly congratulate Professor Melfi on this important achievement” – says the General Director of Aoup Silvia Briani“because this university position is prestigious for her and will give her the opportunity to bring to Calabria all the wealth of experience she has accumulated over the years. This is an experience that we intend to leverage through forms of collaboration that will be welcome. Today, the Multidisciplinary Robotic Surgery Center of Aoup, equipped with 4 robotic systems, is indeed a reference point at an international level for training, teaching, management operations, and interdisciplinary offerings. Therefore, it is only right to thank her for everything she has been able to sow and make flourish up to today.”

“For me, it is a return to my roots” – states Franca Melfi – “but above all, it is the opportunity to help build in Calabria what is now an established expertise in robotic surgery in Pisa. Calabria is indeed pursuing an important health project, with the new Faculty of Medicine and Surgery – TD (Digital Technologies), a single-cycle master’s degree program set up to train an innovative type of doctor capable of mastering the new opportunities offered by emerging technologies and artificial intelligence.”

“On this front, I can bring my experience and thus conclude my professional career where I was born, like a circle that closes. I naturally thank all the entities and institutions, primarily Aoup, for everything that has been possible to achieve in Pisa over these fruitful years, which have allowed for the implementation of such a farsighted project that is now moving forward on its own and, in this case, allows us to continue working together even at a distance.”
