JAKARTA – Brigadier General TNI (Ret.) Daan Jahja is one of the figures who played an important role in the incident Rengasdengklok. Together with other young people, the former Governor (Military) of Greater Jakarta worked together to realize the ideals of the Indonesian people free from colonialism.

Born in Padang Panjang, West Sumatra on January 5 1925, Daan Jahja was the son of Jahja Datoek Kajo and Sjahrizan Jahja, from Kotogadang, Agam, West Sumatra. During the Indonesian Independence Revolution, Daan Jahja joined the Prapatan 10 group which was a follower of Sutan Sjahrir and was headquartered on Jalan Prapatan 10, Jakarta.

During the Rengasdengklok incident, Daan Jahja took Mohammad Hatta to Rengasdengklok, Karawang, West Java. Meanwhile, the Menteng 31 group led by Chaerul Saleh brought Soekarno. These two groups demanded that Soekarno-Hatta immediately proclaim Indonesia’s independence.

This pressure was carried out by young people following Japan’s defeat by the Allies in World War II. However, Soekarno-Moh. Hatta wanted the proclamation to be carried out through the Indonesian Independence Preparatory Committee (PPKI). Meanwhile, the youth group wants the proclamation to be carried out as soon as possible without going through the PPKI, which is considered a Japanese-made body.

Apart from that, Soekarno and Moh. Hatta was not influenced by Japan. The youth were worried that independence, which was the result of the Indonesian people’s struggle, would become as if it were a gift from Japan.

Because they didn’t want to take advantage of this momentum, finally on Thursday, August 16 1945 at around 03.00 WIB, the youth kidnapped the two national figures and took them to Rengasdengklok.

Not only that, Daan Jahja was also actively involved in the giant meeting at Ikada Field, Jakarta. Together with Subianto, who is the uncle of the Minister of Defense (Menhan) Prabowo Subianto, Daan Jahja reported the situation at Ikada Field to the Central Indonesian National Committee Office (KNIP).

Because before dawn, all Indonesian people from various regions had gathered at Ikada Square to listen to President Soekarno’s speech at the Giant Meeting. Ikada Square is now called the National Monument (Monas). On the other hand, the Japanese army deployed panzers and tanks as a precaution.

To avoid chaos between the Indonesian people and the Japanese army. The proclamation was finally announced at Soekarno’s house on Jalan Pegangsaan Timur Number 56, Jakarta. On August 16 at midnight the group arrived in Jakarta. The next day, precisely August 17 1945, the Proclamation was announced by President Soekarno-Moh. Hatta.

Daan Jahja died on June 20 1985 right on Eid al-Fitr 1405H after returning from the Sunda Kelapa Mosque, Jakarta after performing the Id Prayer.
