jpnn.com, PAPUA – Paulus Waterpauw is a creator of historical stories about the careers achieved by native Papuans in this country. His career was not only brilliant in the police, he also flourished in civil government.
He was appointed Acting Governor of West Papua on May 12 2022 by Minister of Home Affairs General (Ret.) Tito Karnavian representing the President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo.
Paulus Waterpauw met the requirements to become acting governor because he was a retired National Police officer with the rank of commissioner general, then was hired at the Ministry of Home Affairs as Deputy II of BNPP (National Border Management Agency), namely on May 19 2022 or a week after the inauguration.
Coinciding with National Awakening Day, May 20 2022, Paulus officially became the number one person in West Papua Province.
This was after the handover of positions from the governor and deputy governor of West Papua 2017-2022 from Do Minggus Mandacan and Muhammad Lakotani.
“As native Papuans, we have to think more creatively. “Show that the Land of Papua has a different perspective, loyalty, and humanistic relationship to the progress of society,” said Waterpauw on one occasion.
Paulus ended his service in the Indonesian Police with the rank of commissioner general and his final position was Kabaintelkam Polri.
Paulus was appointed by National Police Chief General Sigit Listyo Pramowo as Kabaintelkam Polri on February 24 2021, his inauguration in this position was accompanied by a promotion from Inspector General to Commissioner General with three stars on his shoulders.
That day became history for Komjen Paulus Waterpauw, his family in particular and the entire Papuan people in general.
For the first time in this country, a native Papuan child has achieved the highest position in the Indonesian National Police, which has never been achieved before.
This achievement was achieved because Waterpauw was considered professional in carrying out the duties and responsibilities given to him by the state.
Only Paulus Waterpauw was the Regional Police Chief twice in the same place. He was Papua Police Chief in the 2015-2017 period.
Previously he was the regional police chief in West Papua in 2014-2015. From Papua, Paulus Waterpauw was transferred to Medan, North Sumatra to become the 2017-2018 Regional Police Chief in the homeland of his beloved wife Roma Megawanty Pasaribu.
Then in 2019 there were racist riots in Wamena, Jayapura and Timika, Paulus Waterpauw, who at that time served as Main Policy Analyst for Sespimti Sespim Lemdiklat, was returned to Papua to become Regional Police Chief for the second time.
This second appointment means that Paulus Waterpauw is highly trusted by the state to secure Papua province.
The state really knows the abilities of Paulus Waterpauw, thus producing policies that are not common in our country.
The history of Paulus Waterpauw’s career journey also notes that he was the first Papuan to become a ceremonial inspector at the State Palace during the commemoration of the Republic of Indonesia’s 61st Anniversary in 2006, when Susilo Bambang Yudoyono was President.
“It’s not easy to be a ceremonial inspector at the State Palace. Only people who are selected, have brilliant achievements and are potential future leaders can appear there,” commented a senior journalist in Papua at that time.
Dedicated to the State
Born in Fakfak 25 October 1965, his father Sertu Ferdinan Waterpauw was a policeman and his mother Yakomina Atiamuna, a housewife.
