Progress is being made to ensure that avocados sent to the US do not come from illegal orchards, says Ken Salazar

The United States Ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazaracknowledged this Friday the commitment of the government of Michoacan to combat illegal gardens avocado destined for their country and, thereby, advance efforts to combat deforestation and climate change.

In a statement distributed by the diplomatic headquarters and dated in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, it is detailed that through the Decree for Certification against Deforestation and voluntary certification Pro-Forest Avocado More than 148 thousand hectares of avocado orchards will be part of this initiative.

“In this way, it should be possible to ensure that avocados exported to the United States do not come from illegal orchards or from deforested areas. We hope to see a rigorous implementation of this program,” said Salazar.

This initiative, he added, will also serve to ensure that local producers contribute to conservation and remedy environmental damage, “the participation of the Association of Producers and Packers Exporters of Avocado of Mexico (APEAM) is crucial in this work.”
