Progressive-conservative suitability for the next president
Lee Jae-myeong, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, emerged as the leader in the Dong-A Ilbo New Year’s opinion poll on his suitability to be the next progressive president with a response rate of 39.4%, outside the margin of error (±3.1%).
In the Dong-A Ilbo New Year’s poll on the 31st, five progressive candidates for the next president were randomly called and asked who was most suitable to be the next president. As a result, Representative Lee received 39.4%. Next was Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon (8.5%), National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-sik (5.7%), former Prime Minister Kim Boo-gyeom (2.9%), and former Gyeongnam Province Governor Kim Kyung-soo (1.4%). The responses of ‘there is no suitable person’ and ‘don’t know’ were 23.9% and 17.2%, respectively. This survey was conducted on people who have so far expressed their intention to run or whose possibility has been mentioned in each party.
By political party support, 74.1%, or about three-quarters, of Democratic Party supporters said that Representative Lee is suitable as the next president. Governor Kim (6.5%), Chairman Woo (5.0%), and former Governor Kim (1.3%) followed. Among the People Power Party supporters, Governor Kim was the highest at 10.2%, followed by former Prime Minister Kim (6.4%), Chairman Woo (4.2%), and Representative Lee (4.1%).
In a survey on the suitability of the conservative camp’s next president, former lawmaker Yoo Seung-min came in at 10.7%, followed by Daegu Mayor Hong Jun-pyo (8.5%), former CEO Han Dong-hoon (8.2%), and Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon (7.6%). Rep. Lee Jun-seok of the New Reform Party (4.9%) and Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo of the People Power Party (3.7%) followed. More than half (53.2%) responded that ‘there is no suitable person’ (36.8%) and ‘I don’t know’ (16.4%).
Among respondents who identified themselves as conservatives, Mayor Hong and former Representative Han competed at 15.5% and 15.3%, respectively, followed by Mayor Oh (13.9%) and former Representative Yoo (5.4%). Among the moderates, the largest number of respondents (13.2%) chose former Rep. Yoo, followed by former Representative Han (8.1%), Mayor Hong (7.5%), and Mayor Oh (6.6%). Among the progressives, former Rep. Yoo (14%), Mayor Hong (4.4%), Rep. Ahn (4.2%), and Rep. Lee (4.0%) were in that order.
Among those in their 50s and 40s, former Rep. Yoo had the highest suitability for the next president among conservative candidates at 18.2% and 14.6%, respectively, while Mayor Hong had the highest suitability for the next president among those in their 60s (12.7%) and 30s (12.2%). Among those aged 70 or older, former CEO Han (16.4%) and Mayor Oh (15.5%) competed.
