Promising judo player Hyeonji Lee (17, Namnyeong High School 2nd year) won a gold medal at the International Judo Federation (IJF) World Youth Championships. Hyunji Lee won a bout over France’s Celia Cancan in the finals of the women’s heavyweight (over 78 kg) competition held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on the 5th (local time). The match was completed in just 26 seconds, with half of the heel kicks and half of the presses added. IJF commented on its website, “Lee Hyun-ji showed no mercy in the finals.”
Hyun-ji Lee has stood out since her days at Jeju Seo Middle School, beating out high school and college seniors to be selected as a member of the national team. He won the 2022 Asian Youth Championship when he was in his third year of middle school, and reached the top again this year at the same competition held in Mungyeong, Gyeongsangbuk-do.
They are already showing off their skills not only in youth competitions but also on adult stages. He won the Asian Championship held in April this year, and took third place at the Tbilisi Grand Slam in March and the Dushanbe Grand Slam in May. At the Tbilisi Games, he defeated Sone Akira, the gold medalist in this weight class at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, in the bronze medal match. This weight class is ranked 18th in the world.
