A few weeks ago, a shocking story shed light on a reality that is little known outside of the ranks of those of us who work in health. A university student in the middle of a professional occupational therapy internship was affected by adverse conditions that threatened her physical and emotional well-being. This dramatic situation reminds us of the vulnerability of our students during their academic practices, where stress and pressure can be overwhelming. As healthcare institutions, we must be committed to constantly reforming and raising standards, to ensure a safe and supportive environment for all students on their way to professional training.

In the case of Teletón, we have done that with a teaching model that transcends the boundaries of technical content. Beyond specific learning outcomes, this approach focuses on protecting the teaching process within a high quality and warm environment, where every student feels valued and supported. By being based on respect and the humanity of learning, the model promotes a caring relationship between teachers and students, fostering not only knowledge, but also the values of solidarity and mutual understanding.

In the field of teaching, evaluation is necessary as a continuous and fundamental practice due to a commitment to the comprehensive development of its students and the continuous improvement of the teaching staff to guarantee educational excellence. This is how we started from 2020 on the use of the ACLEEM surveyan invaluable tool that not only assesses the students’ perception of the educational environment, but also provides detailed insight into key aspects such as the quality and ability of teaching, the willingness of health personnel to help, the feedback provided, the feeling that they would be listened to and, last but not least, the role of the professional role model.

The teaching-learning process is inherently a two-way process, and allows both teachers and students to feed each other’s knowledge, feelings, experiences and visions. It is essential to recognize the importance of this dynamic exchange in order to enrich educational practice, and adapt it to the changing needs and realities of new generations.

By promoting open and respectful dialogue, a collaborative learning environment is created that promotes the personal and professional growth of educators and students, thereby promoting the inclusive development of the educational community. Health institutions are currently reflecting and acting in a way that is consistent with their mission and promoting responsible teaching-learning processes.
