In Burkina, the promotion of “local consumption” is accompanied by an official seal. The government of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, through a new decree, makes the wearing of the “Faso Dan Fani”, the “Koko Dunda” and others, a priority for several categories of agents or actors of Burkinabe economic life. This reinforces a culture almost acquired in the country of “Men of integrity”.

S.T.

Beyond working to offer peace and stability to the Burkinabé people, the government of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, President-in-Office of Burkina Faso, makes a point of honor on the promotion of works of craftsmanship, in particular the “Faso Dan Fani ” which, through the ages and practices, has proven to be a fabric of identity and a real economic asset. It is in this logic that through a decree dated June 02, 2023, the Burkinabe State has decided to promote the wearing of “Faso Dan Fani” which literally means “woven loincloth of the homeland” in Dioula, of “ Koko Dunda” and other traditional fabrics. Initiated in a context of commitment for the recognition of the sovereignty of Burkina, this decision which comes from the concern to promote the works of the crafts of the country, applies, according to the decree, to several socio-professional categories. These include, among others, teachers and students of public and private universities and higher education institutes, administrative, judicial and political authorities, heads of administrative districts, workers in private structures, military and paramilitary structures, etc Emphasizing that the wearing of Faso Dan Fani, Koko dunda or other traditional fabrics is prioritized by the various actors raised during official ceremonies or national or international events, the decree, in its article 6, explains: “Is considered as an official ceremony or event of national scope, any ceremony presided over by the President of Faso, the Prime Minister, the presidents of institutions, the ministers and the heads of administrative districts. “. As for official ceremonies or events of international scope, this is any ceremony in which the President of Faso, the Prime Minister, the presidents of institutions or the ministers outside the national territory participate.

To be more offensive in this new provision, the Burkinabé State evokes only the loincloths of the country’s flagship events, namely: the festivities marking the independence of Burkina Faso; the Ouagadougou International Handicrafts Fair (SIAO); festivities marking the celebration of International Women’s Day; the Pan-African Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (FESPACO); and many others.

A thumbs up for the development of crafts

Cultural identity of the Burkinabé people, the Faso Dan Fani, the Koko dunda and other fabrics, although anchored in the clothing culture of “Men of integrity”, see themselves in a new economic era. Indeed, with this decision, the Burkinabe government has, on the one hand, densified the demand market for the benefit of local craftsmen, and therefore the possibility of making more profits through the sale of their finished products. On the other hand, it is a new economic opportunity which is thus offered to the other players in the chain, in particular dressmakers, stylists, model makers, etc., who will see themselves with more outfits to sew, and this, on a regular basis. In this dynamic, training programs could be developed to train many young people and save them from the clutches of unemployment. This means that Burkina has just given a boost to the development of its crafts. This example, Benin would benefit from taking inspiration from it to also promote its craftsmanship which benefits from a package of products and a rich know-how.
