The insurance number proof is the successor to the social security card. This means you can easily apply for the new document online.
At the beginning of the year, proof of insurance number replaced the social security card. Every employee receives it automatically when they start their first job. Anyone who has already started their career but would like to have the new document can apply for it free of charge online from the German Pension Insurance Federation (DRV).
How to submit the online application
To do this, interested parties must access the DRV’s online services and “Request insurance and pension documents” under “Request/submit documents”. By providing your person and insurance number, you can apply for a free “reissue of proof of insurance number”.
The new ID card contains – like the previous one – the insurance number, first name, last name, maiden name and the date of issue. With the introduction of the new ID card, the loss of an insurance number or social security card no longer needs to be reported to the responsible collection agency or pension insurance provider. At the same time, according to the DRV, the obligation to return unusable ID cards no longer applies.
Old ID cards remain valid
In principle, employees are no longer required to present one of the ID cards to their employer. Employers usually receive the insurance number via automated retrieval from the pension insurance data office. Only if this is not possible is the ID required to be presented, according to the DRV.
By the way: Just because a new ID document has been introduced does not mean that old social security cards are expiring. These remain valid.
