DIJON, France, Aug. 8, 2025 – Chikungunya has arrived in Burgundy, with health officials confirming the first case of the mosquito-borne illness contracted locally.

Health officials have confirmed the first indigenous case of Chikungunya in Burgundy, France, sparking immediate preventive measures.

  • Chikungunya virus confirmed as locally contracted in Burgundy.
  • A second suspected case is under investigation.
  • Preventive measures are being deployed in Dijon.
  • 35 imported Chikungunya cases have been identified in the region since May 1, 2025.

The Regional Health Agency (ARS) Bourgogne / Franche-Comté announced Friday, August 8, that a second case is suspected. “It concerns a person domiciled in Dijon also, declared on August 5, and remains to date pending confirmation by the National Reference Center of Arboviroses,” the agency stated. This marks the first time Chikungunya has been reported as locally contracted in the Burgundy/Franche-Comté region.

“Immediate Preventive Measures” Deployed

The discovery has galvanized health services, prompting swift action to prevent further spread. “Immediate preventive measures are deployed in Dijon, on targeted perimeters around places of passage from sick people, potential transmission areas,” the ARS confirmed.

Imported Cases Precede Local Transmission

Health officials are investigating whether the tiger mosquito is responsible for the local transmissions. Public Health France has identified 35 imported cases of Chikungunya in the region since May 1, 2025. One of these imported cases falls within the perimeter of the two current suspected cases. Imported cases typically involve individuals who have traveled to contaminated areas, suggesting that tiger mosquitoes in the region may now be relaying the virus.
