It has been reported that Prosecutor General Lee Won-seok reprimanded Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office Chief Lee Chang-soo for failing to report in advance the first face-to-face investigation of President Yoon Seok-yeol’s wife, Kim Kun-hee, and instructed the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office’s Inspection Department to investigate the truth. The Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office, which is investigating Ms. Kim’s alleged manipulation of Deutsche Motors stock prices and alleged bribery of luxury bags, reported the investigation into Ms. Kim to the Prosecutor General after the fact, sparking a heated controversy over ‘passing over the Prosecutor General.’
According to the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office, this morning, Chief Prosecutor Lee had a face-to-face report to Commissioner Lee regarding the investigation into Ms. Kim. It is reported that Commissioner Lee strongly reprimanded Chief Prosecutor Lee during the meeting. After the report, Commissioner Lee also instructed the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office’s Inspection Department to investigate the facts related to the investigation into Ms. Kim. Some have mentioned the possibility of an inspection of the Central District Prosecutors’ Office, but a Supreme Prosecutors’ Office official explained that it is not yet at the stage of starting an inspection.
The prosecution previously questioned Ms. Kim in a closed-door face-to-face manner at a third location, the Presidential Security Service building in Changseong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul. The questioning lasted 11 hours and 50 minutes, from 1:30 PM on the 20th to 1:20 AM on the 21st, past midnight. Prosecutor General Lee was only informed by Chief Prosecutor Lee that Ms. Kim was under investigation when the face-to-face questioning of Ms. Kim was coming to an end. It is said that Prosecutor General Lee did not know about the fact of the investigation or the location until then.
As the controversy over the ‘passing of the prosecutor general’ arose, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office explained that it could not report on the Deutsche Motors case because the prosecutor general’s investigative authority was excluded. However, on the 22nd, the prosecutor general met with reporters on his way to work at the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office and expressed his displeasure, saying, “I have said that there are no exceptions, privileges, or sanctuaries before the law, but this principle was not upheld during the investigation of the president’s wife,” and “I will take necessary measures after finding out the truth and circumstances.”
