Prosecutorial intervention for the illegalities reported on islands by occupying beaches or by continuing to operate shops that have been sealed, was marked by the initiative of the new Prosecutor of Supreme Court Georgia Adelini.

The new head of the Supreme Court’s Prosecutor’s Office intervened for two cases that primarily concern Paros, where there are complaints and citizen mobilizations about the illegal occupation of beaches in many parts of the island’s coastline, by placing sunbeds and umbrellas and preventing residents from having free access.

Mrs. Adeilini asks the competent local prosecution authorities to strictly observe the law and repeats a recent circular on the need for free access of citizens to beaches, which was issued by the deputy prosecutor of the Supreme Court Panagiotis Panagiotopoulos last May.

The situation that prevails especially in Paros, has caused intense reactions from residents and heaps of posts on the internet about the beaches without access or for others, where exploitation licenses have been given but are being violated by expanding the occupation of the beaches.

The new Prosecutor of the Supreme Court Mrs. Adeilini, in her order to the Prosecutor of the First Instance of Syros Olympia Lambropoulou, mentions in particular: “Regarding the complaints that refer to the occupation of parts of the beach in Paros, without the conditions of the law and the obstruction of free access of the public on the beaches, we remind you of our circular numbered 10/4-5-2023 and ask for its faithful implementation”.

Also, prosecutorial intervention was noted for a store in Serifos. In particular, the mayor of Serifos, Konstantinos Revinthis, sealed a beach bar business, which, as he claims, operates illegally. In particular, the Mayor of Serifos has stated in his statement: “The business operates illegally, with arbitrary buildings & without a beach use permit. You proceed as a Municipality to seal the shop and see it open again and some public services are on extended holidays. We will do our duty for the island, always against the interests”.

The prosecutor of the Supreme Court, in her order to the Syros First Instance Prosecutor regarding Serifos, states:

“We are sending you publications of the electronic press in order to investigate the complaints referred to in them by the Sheriff Mayor regarding the continuation, with the tolerance of the competent services, of operating a business whose store had been sealed, in order to verify any ex officio prosecuted criminal acts.”
