The Attorney General’s Office opened an investigation to clarify the purchase of 40 water tankers by the Government, after the disbursement of a considerable sum of $46.8 billion.

This contract, intended to address emergencies in the department of La Guajira, has raised concern because, so far, it has not benefited the communities Wayú and the region for which they were acquired.

The vehicles, which were planned to be destined for critical areas such as Riohacha, Maicao, Manaure and Uribia, They have been parked since last year, without having provided service to the communities most in need, which has generated concern among the population and the authorities.

In this situation, The Prosecutor’s Office has taken action on the matter and has announced the opening of an investigation to determine if there are irregularities in the process of acquiring the tank trucks. The prosecuting body has indicated that all stages of the contract will be carefully examined, in order to determine if there was favoring of any contractor or if other possible crimes related to this issue have been committed.

This investigation adds to the actions undertaken by the Attorney General’s Office, which has announced an inspection visit to the Matamoros Battalion of the Army, located in Uribia, La Guajira, to verify the condition of the tanker type vehicles acquired by the National Disaster Risk Management Unit (Ungrd). According to the Public Ministry, the main concern lies in the fact that the tank trucks are parked and are not fulfilling their function of transporting water in the region.

In response to the criticism, the Ungrd has issued a statement in which it announces that as of This Tuesday the operations of 10 of the 40 tank cars will begin. Likewise, the remaining 30 vehicles are expected to be fully operational by next Thursday, February 22.
