Prosecutor’s Office punished those who were ‘violent’ with animals

The Prosecutor’s Office presented Paola Andrea Rodríguez Rincón before a guarantee control judge as allegedly responsible for causing the death of a one-year-old and two-month-old dog named ‘Monster’, in Bello (Antioquia). On June 9, in an act of intolerance, the woman threw the animal from the 12th floor of a building. During the investigations, it was learned that Rodríguez Rincón had acted in this way in retaliation against his ex-partner who ended the romantic relationship and refused to resume it.

The alleged aggressor was summoned on several occasions; However, he did not heed the calls of justice. In that sense, she was charged as an absentee for the crime of animal abuse. And on June 8 of this year, on a public road in Ibagué, Mario Pastrana Prieto allegedly attacked a dog named ‘Joan of Arc’, who was sleeping on a platform.

According to the investigation, the man hit the animal’s head with a stick because it had allegedly bitten a family member. As a result of the aggression, ‘Joan of Arc’ had changes in her behavior, she experienced fear when she had contact with humans and suffered serious damage to her emotional health. Due to these events, Pastrana Prieto was charged with the crime of aggravated animal abuse, a charge that was not accepted.

And in context, after an arduous discussion in the First Commission, the project that seeks to strengthen the fight against animal abuse, called the Angel Law, was given the green light. The norm that now goes to the Plenary Session is authored by the animal rights senator Andrea Padilla and included the presentation of the senator from the same bench and president of this legislative cell Ariel Ávila.

In this way, Senator Ávila presented figures regarding the abuse of animals in the country and how they are linked to violence against women, since, for example, 41% of people convicted of violent crimes have a history of abuse, likewise, 86% of women victims of violence report abuse of pets, and 81% of men convicted of gender violence have incurred animal abuse.
