The prosecution on Tuesday, May 18, asked the Gagarinsky court in Moscow to sentence the founder of the movement For New Socialism, Nikolai Platoshkin, to 6 years in prison in a general regime colony. The politician is accused under criminal articles of incitement to riots and public dissemination of knowingly false information about circumstances that threaten the life and safety of citizens.

In addition, the prosecutor’s office requested a fine of 500,000 rubles for Platoshkin. The verdict will be announced on May 19 at 13.00 Moscow time.

Nikolai Platoshkin, head of the Department of International Relations and Diplomacy at Moscow University for the Humanities, has been under house arrest since June 2020. The investigation believes that he disseminated false information about the coronavirus infection COVID-19.

Prisoner of conscience and political prisoner

Platoshkin has repeatedly criticized the Russian authorities. Amnesty International recognized the politician as a prisoner of conscience, and the Memorial Human Rights Center as a political prisoner.
