The prosecution summoned Hong Seon-geun (64), chairman of Money Today, for questioning in relation to the so-called ‘Daejang-dong 5 billion club’, which was identified as having received or promised to receive 5 billion won from Hwacheon Daeyu Asset Management (Hwacheon Daeyu).
According to the legal community on the 25th, the 3rd Anti-Corruption Investigation Division (Chief Prosecutor Lee Seung-hak) of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office summoned Chairman Hong for questioning on the 24th as a suspect in the Anti-Corruption Act. This is the second time that Chairman Hong has been questioned by the prosecution in relation to the 5 billion club suspicions, following November 2021.
Chairman Hong is accused of borrowing 5 billion won from Hwacheon Daewoo major shareholder Kim Man-bae around October 2019 and then paying back only the principal without interest about two months later. It is reported that Chairman Hong wrote a loan agreement when he borrowed money from Kim, and the loan agreement they wrote clearly stated the interest rate. Kim served as Money Today’s legal team leader and deputy director.
However, it was investigated that Chairman Hong did not pay interest corresponding to the interest rate to Mr. Kim and only returned the principal of 5 billion won. In November 2022, the police judged that Chairman Hong had made a profit by not paying interest for two months and sent Chairman Hong to the prosecution.
It is reported that Mr. Kim admitted to the financial transaction with Chairman Hong during the prosecution investigation, but stated that it had nothing to do with the Daejang-dong business. Chairman Hong is also said to have stated the same thing to the prosecution. It is reported that the prosecution plans to decide soon whether to indict Chairman Hong.
