Protect Yourself and Your Family Against Fall Viruses Before Thanksgiving, Experts Recommend

by time news

As Thanksgiving approaches, health officials are urging people to get vaccinated against fall viruses. Dr. Mandy Cohen, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, stressed the importance of getting vaccinated to protect yourself and your family during the holiday season.

With flu, COVID, and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) expected to circulate at the same time this season, vaccination efforts are crucial in mitigating the potential impact of these viruses. Cohen emphasized the need for the public to be proactive in getting vaccinated ahead of the holiday season to allow their bodies to build up protection.

Despite the availability of COVID vaccines, uptake in the U.S. has been slow. Cohen acknowledged the desire to leave COVID behind but reminded the public that the virus is still present and causing severe illness and death.

In addition to vaccinations, health care providers recommend taking additional precautions for Thanksgiving gatherings, such as staying home if sick, wearing masks in certain situations, and increasing ventilation. Dr. Céline Gounder, a medical contributor and editor-at-large for public health at KFF Health News, also advised speaking with a health care provider to determine the need for RSV immunization, especially for infants and older adults.

Cohen emphasized the need to consider personal risk and the individuals you will be around when making decisions about Thanksgiving gatherings. It’s important to prioritize the health and safety of yourself and others as the holiday season approaches.
