Workers from the Judiciary stormed the Plenary Session of the Congress of Yucatan today to express their rejection of the recently approved Judicial Reform.

The protesters entered the building chanting “traitors,” pushing and shoving, with the aim of preventing local deputies from discussing the reform.

Although the reform was not on the agenda for the day, the protesters sought to interrupt any attempt to discuss it, which was suspended.

The protesters, who fear that the Yucatan Congress will follow the example of other states and approve the reform, gathered outside the Congress building with slogans such as “Justice is not voted for” and “Don’t sell your vote.” Despite the authorities’ efforts to contain the protesters, the entrances to the building succumbed to the pressure of the crowd.

The protest follows the recent approval of the reform in the Senate of the Republic, where the ruling was generally supported with 86 votes in favor and 41 against. The reform, which proposes the election of judges, magistrates and ministers by popular vote, is now in the hands of local congresses for review and approval.
