In Sri Lanka last year, food price hikes and fuel shortages, as well as high inflation, caused domestic unrest.

Because of this, many human rights violations have taken place in the country, the United States has issued an allegation.

The US Secretary of State had also issued a statement yesterday regarding these allegations.

In this regard, it is further stated in the report that,

“From March to July last year 2022, the country was plunged into civil unrest due to an economic crisis including frequent power cuts, soaring food prices and fuel shortages.

Accusation of the United States

In this situation, the United States Department of State has accused Sri Lanka of significant human rights violations in 2022.

Demonstrations called for the resignation of Gotabaya Rajapaksa and members of the Rajapaksa family from the leadership of the government and for political and economic reforms, the statement said.

It is also noteworthy that this allegation was made in the annual report of countries on human rights practices published yesterday by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.
